An unshielded drum is cheaper and harder to saturate, because its return flux closes through the air around it. That is fine until the part next to it is an ADC input.

The return flux closes through the air around the part. That open path saturates late and costs less to make — fine wherever the neighbours can tolerate the field.

Shielded

Contained field

A ferrite resin shield closes the magnetic circuit, so almost nothing escapes the body. Choose this when the inductor sits near an antenna, an ADC input or a current-sense trace.
