A rod has no return leg, so the flux closes through air. Low effective permeability, very high saturation headroom, very low cost — the trade rod cores exist to make.

Hard to saturate

A straight rod has no return leg, so the flux closes through air. The effective permeability is low and the part is very hard to saturate, which is exactly why a rod choke holds up on a supply line where a closed core would fold.

More inductance per turn

A toroid or gapped pair keeps the flux inside the core. You get far more inductance for the same turns and almost no external field — at higher cost, and with a saturation limit that arrives much sooner.
